It’s our last Feature Blogger of 2016 and we cannot be happier to have with us Tay Ying! Known for her fashionable OOTDs on Instagram and her beauty related videos on YouTube, we chat with Tay Ying to find out more about this chic girl. We also asked how will she be celebrating Christmas as the festive season dawns upon us. Read on to get to know more about Tay Ying! :)
- Hi Tay Ying, tell us more about yourself!
Hello! I’m Tay Ying but I prefer being called Tay as it feels less formal since my full name is actually Tay Ying hahaha! I started blogging when I was 17 and back then it was more for expressing my thoughts and to document my special milestones. I am also a dancer, mainly specializing in modern, and I have been dancing for 3 years now. I can be both extremes – awkward and crazy, and those depend mainly on my surroundings.
- How would you describe your social media journey, and what do you love most about it?
At the start, I never expected to make social media a very important part of my life and through this journey, I would say meeting fellow influencers and being able to work with various brands is what I love most. Over the years I learnt about what it takes to be a good influencer, from the content that I upload and to finding my own style. It has definitely evolved over the years as in the past, I just posted whatever I wanted. But now, I’m becoming more aware about my content and quality so that it is more appealing and relatable to my readers and viewers.
- If you could only blog or create YouTube videos, which would you prefer and why?
This is a tough one, given that I became more active on YouTube this year. But if I needed to make a choice, I would blog as that was where I started. They always say, remember your roots! But of course, I hope I wouldn’t need to give up either :D
- As an avid dancer, share with us the genres of dance you enjoy doing.
As mentioned, I focus more on modern dance. Other than that, I found joy in other genres such as break dancing, hip hop and popping. Would definitely want to explore the other genres soon!
- What values do you think being a dancer has taught you?
It has taught me to be more disciplined and independent and that it’s really up to your hard work and determination to get to where you desire. It has also taught me to be more open minded and to learn how to accept constructive criticism and working on them instead of comparing yourself to others.
- Do you have a personal quote that you draw inspiration and strength from?
“To be human means to struggle, to make mistakes, to be imperfect, to get it wrong and fail. So try to practice self-compassion – don’t be so hard on yourself.”
- What are some pros and cons to having celebrity parents, and how do you manage the bad sides?
Pros are that I am able to witness the behind the scenes of filming and understand what they actually go through. Through them, I also got to know many people and some have even became important people in my life.
Cons would include being constantly labeled as “so and so’s daughter” instead of having my own identity. Its pretty rare to have a family day out as everyone’s schedules are everywhere and when we do, we don’t really get much peace from the public hahaha!
- Christmas is drawing close, any plans this year to celebrate?
Every year I would have a Christmas gathering with my secondary school friends and we would do Secret Santa! It’s a yearly tradition for us and its always what we look forward to most during the Christmas period. There are years where we would have Christmas gatherings with our family friends or relatives too so I’m not sure about this year.
- What do you love most about this year-end festive season?
I’ve always loved the Christmas vibes, especially once you step into Orchard and you see all the Christmas decos and huge trees being put up. That’s when it starts to feel like Christmas! And also, I feel that Christmas is a great way to wrap up the year other than New Years’ Eve or Day as its also the day we can give thanks and appreciate one another with heartwarming meals and gifts :)
- Lastly, as Christmas and then New Year knocks on our door, what resolutions do you have?
As I plan to take a gap year after I graduated, I hope to be able to find myself through exploring different things and places, be it through travelling, influencing or dancing. Also, to really have a good rest for I haven’t rested well for many years.
As the year draws to a close, we want to wish Tay Ying and her loved ones a Merry Christmas and a very happy New Year! Thanks for taking time to have a chat with us, and we hope for a really fruitful year ahead :)
Here’s wishing all of you a festive and celebratory Christmas as well, we’ll be back next year!
